I’m a potter working in Brussels, Belgium. My early training under Billy-Eddy Strickland at Thomas Jefferson College in Michigan, exposed me to many different approaches to working with clay and firing and instilled in me a desire to challenge preconceived ideas about what can and can’t be done with clay.
Pushing these limits has led me to develop a unique practice and body of smoke and charcoal fired work using innovative resist and application techniques and only newspaper or charcoal as the combustible.
Through teaching this technique via the hands-on workshop “Oh, Yes You Can! Smoke-Firing
in an Electric Kiln”, I have aimed to alter student’s perception of technical limits and give
them a springboard for their own explorations.
Recently, I’ve been experimenting with “Tanka” firing in an electric kiln, burying my pots
under charcoal and pushing the earthenware body to its limits. We’ll see where that leads
me.
